Does Any of This Sound Familiar?
- On humid days, your hair frizzes up no matter what you do
- You’ve had Japanese straightening elsewhere and the result looked unnatural — too stiff
- You’ve been told your bleached or colored hair can’t be treated
- Age-related frizz and unruliness have become harder to manage
- You spend 30+ minutes every morning fighting your hair with heat tools
If any of these resonate,
it’s not too late for your hair.
What Is Japanese Hair Straightening?

Japanese hair straightening — also known as shukumou kyousei in Japan — is a permanent treatment that restructures the internal protein bonds of your hair into a straight configuration. Unlike keratin treatments that wash out in weeks, this treatment lasts until new hair grows in — staying smooth through New York’s most humid summers, regardless of humidity, rain, or washing.
At T-gardens, we use Milbon Liscio — Japan’s leading professional straightening system — administered by Liscio-certified, Japan-trained specialists. The treatment is 100% formaldehyde-free and fully customized to your hair’s texture, condition, and history.

-
1

Consultation & Hair Assessment
Your stylist evaluates hair texture, condition, chemical history (color, bleach, past perms), and porosity. This shapes every decision in the treatment — nothing is applied without understanding your hair first.
-
2

Shampoo & Preparation
Hair is cleansed and prepared. For retouch clients, previously straightened sections are protected with conditioning cream before solution is applied to new growth only.
-
3

Chemical Solution Application
A customized Milbon Liscio solution — chosen from multiple strengths based on your hair’s condition — is applied to gently break down the bonds that cause curl and frizz.
-
4

Processing & Monitoring
Processing time is carefully monitored — never set on a fixed timer. Your stylist checks every few minutes to ensure optimal results without over-processing.
-
5

Rinse & Blow-Dry
Solution is rinsed out and hair is blow-dried approximately 80% dry before the pressing stage begins.
-
6

Flat Iron Pressing
The most critical stage. Your stylist flat-irons each section at a precisely calibrated temperature, locking in the permanently straight structure strand by strand.
-
7

Neutralization
Neutralizer is applied to re-bond the hair in its new straight configuration and restore the hair’s pH balance. Left on for 5–10 minutes, then rinsed thoroughly.
-

Deep Conditioner, Haircut & Finish
An in-salon treatment restores moisture and seals the cuticle. Your haircut is included. You leave with silky, straight, healthy-looking hair.

Smoothing Treatments
Note: Keratin and OXO organic smoothing treatments are not eligible for RE-DO (fix), as results depend on each client’s hair texture and condition. If your hair is color-treated, there is a possibility of slight discoloration. These treatments improve shine and texture — in some cases, hair may not be fully straightened.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Japanese hair straightening ?
Japanese hair straightening is a permanent treatment that chemically restructures the internal bonds of your hair into a straight configuration using chemical solution and controlled heat. Results last until new hair grows in — regardless of humidity or washing.
How is it different from keratin treatment?
Japanese straightening permanently alters the internal structure of the hair — pin-straight, humidity-proof results. Keratin treatment coats the outside of the hair shaft and washes out in 2–4 months; it reduces frizz but doesn’t fully straighten curly hair.
How long does it last?
The treated hair stays permanently straight. Most clients return every 6–12 months for a touch-up on new growth. Bangs need a touch-up every 3 months. T-gardens offers 10% off for returning clients within 6 months.
How long does the appointment take?
3–5 hours depending on hair length, thickness, and whether it’s a first-time or touch-up treatment. Haircut and deep conditioner are included. Plan to set aside a full day for your first appointment.
Is it damaging to hair?
When performed correctly by experienced specialists using quality products — as at T-gardens — the treatment can be done safely. We use Milbon Liscio (formaldehyde-free) and assess every client’s hair before applying any chemical. Many clients say their hair feels healthier after the treatment.
Can I get it if my hair is bleached or colored?
Permanently colored hair can often receive Japanese straightening — your stylist assesses the condition first. Heavily bleached hair is not suitable; OXO organic smoothing is recommended instead. Send photos of your hair to tgardensny@gmail.com for a free pre-assessment.
How much does it cost at T-gardens?
Japanese straightening ranges from $370 (Senior stylist) to $580 (Owner Tatsuya), depending on stylist rank. Bangs straightening starts from $160. Haircut and deep conditioner are always included.
Is the treatment formaldehyde-free?
Yes. T-gardens uses Milbon Liscio — 100% formaldehyde-free. Safe for the stylist and the client, and delivers silky results without the health concerns associated with formaldehyde-based products.
